Sis Arendas became a Pioneer in 1976 and has served as a Member at Large, Treasurer, Community Service Chair Person, Council Vice President and served as President for two years. For the past 31 years, Sis has coordinated the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind. In this capacity, she organizes the services of clowns, therapy dogs, local sports characters and synchronizes the purchase of toys, candy, stuffed animals and refreshments for 100 children. She also coordinates themaintenance of the supply of beeping eggs that the children use for this event. For the past 20 years, Sis has volunteered at the Forbes Nursing Center where patients eagerly look forward to a monthly “ice cream and cookie night and are served homemade cookies and ice cream. Craft night at the Children’s institute in Pittsburghhas been a long time program in which Sis plays the role of coordinator/participant. She draws on her experience with the School for the Blind and her enthusiasm for both of these projects encourages a group of faithful volunteers to maintain a high level of interest in continuing these very worthwhile efforts. Sis has maintained a high degree of interest in care packages for the military. She also initiated the collection of medical supplies for a First Responder unit in Afghanistan. Due to her efforts, an American flag that was flown over the battlefield in Afghanistan and a certificate of appreciation was personally presented to the Fort Pitt Chapter at their board meeting by military personnel.
